Nursery and supplier leaders tour Colorama Nursery with Assembly Member Ed Hernandez during a "Meet Your Legislator" event held in Hernandez's district in Azusa California in May, 2010. The tour was led by nursery owner Richard Wilson and Colorama Director of Azusa Operations Steve Haston. These PAC-sponsored events inform legislators regarding nursery issues and introduce them to members that can respond to questions about the pros and cons of legislation and regulation affecting nurseries in their districts. They are sponsored jointly by CANGC-PAC and Nursery Growers Association.
CANGC Political Action Commitee (CANGC-PAC)
Building relationships with elected officials and influencing ballot measures
CANGC-PAC is the electoral action arm of CANGC that represents nursery growers, garden centers, and associate members of the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers. CANGC-PAC holds fund-raising events for candidates for state office and elected state legislators. It builds relationships through participation in agricultural industry events, coalitions, and outreach programs to influence state legislators and the voting public. It sponsors events held by the Association. It contributes to coalition Independent Election Committees aligned with the Association's and Industry's positions. It builds support for and against key ballot measures and legislation important to members.
The PAC is independently funded by contributions and is subject to public reporting requirements. The CANGC-PAC Committee manages its funds so that nearly 100% go to political candidates or issue-influencing activities. EMBARRASSING FACTOID: Despite being the second largest agricultural commodity at over $3.3 billion farm gate value, the nursery industry is presently a lowly Number 11 in political action committee fund-raising behind Poultry, Eggs, Wine, Produce, Dairy, Grapes, Cattle, Citrus, Rice, Grain & Feed, and Nuts.
Except for Dairy, each of these agricultural commodities has fewer sales than nursery. Out of over $15 million raised annually by agricultural political action committees, CANGC-PAC receives and contributes just $28,000 annually! Let's turn up the volume on nursery's voice in the legislature by contributing to our valuable work today.
