The UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DIVISION OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES, COOPERATIVE EXTENSION is seeking an academic candidate to plan, conduct and coordinate a county-based extension program of education and applied research in environmental horticulture with commercial and non-commercial clientele involved in public and private landscape management, nursery production, and other agricultural related entities. Specific issues to address include sustainable landscape practices that conserve water and reduce run-off; green waste and pesticide use; water quality, availability, and efficiency; plant nutrition; and weed, insect and disease management. The advisor will provide consumer horticulture information through limited individual consultation, mass media, retail nursery, other educational institutions and agencies, and professional/paraprofessional organizations. The position includes supervision of a Master Gardener Coordinator and provides academic leadership and program direction to the Master Gardener program and program participants.
Academic appointees in Cooperative Extension are responsible for performance in: extending knowledge and information; applied research and creative activity; professional competence and activity; and University and public service.
A Masters degree in ornamental or environmental horticulture or related field is required. The disciplinary focus of the position includes competence and experience in entomology, plant pathology, horticulture, weed ecology and crop production. A minimum of two years experience working with or in the wholesale nursery and/or landscape industry is highly desired. Experience in Cooperative Extension or similar educational organization is desirable. Must possess organizational and management skills and abilities to facilitate and conduct group processes and supervise staff. A background and criminal history check including fingerprinting will be required for the successful candidate; clearance is required prior to the hire date.

SUMMARY:
Grower/Propagator Liaison & Research & Development Manager
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To provide support for Company's Branded Plants as follows:
o Plant advice/support to Growers
o Maintain data and for Companys various products
2. Implement & manage various Research and Development and Trialing activities
3. Oversee third party Tissue culture laboratories & Propagation Nurseries.
4. Coordinate all plant and product movement.
5. Actively contribute in day to day decisions pertaining to propagation, production, growing, trialing and general plant health of all Company's plant products.
6. To generate and maintain information on all Companys plants for appropriate use.
7. To maintain relationships with Companys licensed growers and propagators.
8. To insure quality of product reaching the retail marketplace.
9. Insure appropriate production levels (quantity and timing).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Self motivated.
Must be proficient in Excel and Word.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to analyze and solve problems on the fly.
Ability to assess product quality compliance and product/service quality.
General plant/horticultural knowledge helpful, but not essential.
A suitable vehicle would be required for local Grower visits within the State.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Must be able to travel for up to week at a time, typically 2-4 times per year
Day to day work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment
Occasional physical effort required Packing, lifting, unloading etc
Private office
